Who Should Have a Wisconsin Dwelling Contractor's Certificate? In Wisconsin all contractors are required to carry a Dwelling Contractor's Certificate. They need a certificate in order to get a work permit to work on your home. The Dwelling Contractor Certification relates to one and two family dwelling permits, not the type of work itself. (From Todd Taylor, Wisconsin Safety & Buildings Division.)...If you're a contractor or you're interested in the process required by the State of Wisconsin to be certified, complete details on how to obtain a certification can be found here. There are some prerequisites to getting a Dwelling Contractor Certification. A person wishing to obtain a Dwelling Contractor Qualifier Certification must attend 12 hours of approved qualifier training education and pass an exam given with that education. Proof of training attendance will need to be provided with the qualifier application. Wisconsin Dwelling License Guidelines.
How does someone apply for the credentials?
What are the terms of the credential? Is Your Contractor Covered?By Wisconsin law, contractors need to post a $25,000 bond or document $250,000 of liability insurance. They must also have workers' compensation insurance and unemployment insurance. Some of you may or may not know this but all home improvement contractors, including roofing contractors, here in the Milwaukee, Wisconsin area are required by law to tell you if they are insured with Commercial Liability Insurance or not. They have to have a written statement to accompany any and all quotes, and if there is a contract it must be included with that as well. The key takeaway here is they may or may not have insurance at all. They are required to tell you but they might not always disclose it like they should, especially in the smaller independently run roofing companies. What Does It Cover? Is it Required? It basically covers all third party bodily injury and any accidental property damage. That's the big one, if they mess something up are you willing to trust they will pay for it? It is NOT intended to warranty their work in any way. Also keep in mind it is not required and many smaller roofers might not have it here in Wisconsin.OK, I'm Worried Now. How Can I Check Out My Roofer? First of all, as far as the insurance goes you shouldn't even need to ask. They are required to provide you with the name and telephone number of their insurance agent so you can call and verify not only that they have coverage for your roofing project, but also that your particular project is in fact covered. Second, you can click here for the Wisconsin State Department of Commerce's website to search (under Dwelling Contractors) for your roofing contractor's certification status. Also ask your Wisconsin roofing contractor for a few references on roofs that closely resemble the job you are trying to do. If the contractor does a good job, they should have no problem at all supplying you with all the references that you require. Of course it would be a lot easier just to use this free site to be put in touch with contractors that we screen for insurance, certification, and criminal background before we even let them in the program.
