Three Things To Know Before You Buy A Scroll Saw
Overview
These scroll saw reviews are designed to help you in learning about scroll saws and choose the one that's best for you.
Scroll saws are designed to cut complicated and delicate work. The small blade moves backwards and forwards vertically to make straight or with movement of the wood, curved cuts.
But the genuine beauty of this saw is you can use it to cut out the inside of a circle. As an example, if you need to get rid of the interior of the letter O or An of a project, simply drill a little hole inside the letter, insert the blade and you can easily cut out the inside of the letter.
Scroll saws come in two basic sizes, 16 inch and 20 in.. This measurement refers to the distance between the back of the blade to the back of the saw arm.
A 16 in. is satisfactory to cut most projects and most sawyers never need a bigger saw. Nevertheless when you move up to a 20 inch saw, the final quality, number of features and ultimately the ease and quality of cut seriously improve.
It'd be simple to make a case for purchasing the 16 in. saw. It's noticeably less in cost. But we've all under acquired a tool for that reason. After a use or 2, you then wish that you would have spent the extra cash and bought the better tool. That logic applies here.
What features do you need?
For me, a low vibration table top is supreme. If your saw has disproportionate vibration, you will not get smooth, quality cuts and after a bit you can stop using the tool, because you can potentially have a headache. This is essentially the most important difference between quality saws and cheaper low end saws.
Easy to change blades are also very important. The simpler it is to switch or adjust something the more that you will use it and the safer it will be. Think about your table saw. If the blades were better to change you would change them more often and actually put the dado blade in when you required, instead of making multiple passes with the regular blade. Same thing here.
Decide how simple it'd be for you to adjust the beveled table, the blade tension or maybe the on/off switch. I find that on each tool I've ever purchased, how well these features worked or not, determined how I ultimately liked the tool.
Think about how you will basically saw the wood. As an example will you set the saw on a table or workbench? Or will you dedicate a particular stand for this particular tool? Many folks will raise the back of the saw so it slopes towards them. They feel this allows them to see better as well as cut with more control.
What accessories will you use the most?
As with all tools there are a trillion accessories available. For me, I believe a good light is the most significant. Some saws have lights that bolt on to the back of the saws. Not bad, but I like to get a $20 flexible arm light from an office supply store that clamps on to the workbench. With a portable light I will move it to use with other tools, if necessary.
Scroll saw work is fragile. An air blower is truly a mandatory feature. Make sure the hose is flexible and long enough to be placed at either the front or back of the cut. If it's too short, it'll push sawdust toward you and without delay on the cutting line.
Which saw should you purchase?
I am hoping thesescroll saw reviewshave been useful. I've tried to cover some basics on this post. But I really like the Delta and Dewalt brands, as well as the Excalibur model. For a less priced option, the craftsman is a brilliant alternative.
