How Painting and Hanging Window Shades Can Be Accomplished More Quickly with Air Power Tools

Since the economic situation is in a dreary spot for now, many families are looking at do-it-yourself projects to keep up or fix up their homes.  If you haven't a clue where your circuit breaker is, there's no time like the present to learn!  Doing home restoration or home remodeling projects can really test your skills and patience, but can also be a satisfying experience if you prepare yourself and know where to ask for advice should you need it.

The right power tools can benefit almost every homeowner. As a general rule, power tools are pieces of equipment that  are powered by an electric motor, a compressed air motor, or a gasoline engine.  Some power tools can be large and stationary, like a router,  or they can be portable, like an electric drill.  Large or small, power tools make any job easier and they help you finish tasks in less time.  Even a task as simple as hanging curtains in the bedroom is more easily tackled with the assistance of a power drill or an electric screwdriver.  Tasks like hanging shelving units can take much longer if you have to screw them in by handImagine the time it takes to screw in all the necessary bracings for shelving units by hand.  Let's be thankful that such a variety of power tools is available.

As an example, think about installing window valances.  Because the curtain rod must be hung on a home's strong studs, the job of hanging the curtains rod can be made much easier by the use of an electric stud finder and an electric drill.  This is an example of how power tools assist with any household task.  When the stud finder finds the location of the studs in the wasll, places where screws will be drilled into the wall can be marked off.  Then it is time to bring out the electric drill.  While many people enjoy the freedom of a cordless drill, a standard electric drill can be obtained for a lower cost and works well for jobs like hanging window treatments.  One job, two helpful power tools to make it go faster and easier.

It is a fact that painting jobs around the house can be DIY jobs that can be made easier with air power tools such as a paint applicators, because not all jobs require the same type of equipment.  Some projects need using paint brushes or paint rollers, while others can be best accomplished by using  spray paint applicators.  The advantage to using a paint sprayer is that it can spread paint or stain in less time than a paint brush or roller can.  By using paint spraying systems, one can finish a task in far less time than by using any other painting equipment.  Not all jobs will call for spray painting applicators; small jobs are best completed by a brush because they give finer control.  It is always a good idea to keep paint remover around when painting to clean up any mistakes quickly.

You can find tool kits at your local home improvement store that have the basic power tools.  Small electric tool kits have the most important tools such as a cordless drill, a grinder and a jigsaw.  With these indispensable portable power tools, you can easily handle almost any task around your house in no time.

Frequently Asked Questions...

Screwing into a drywall, hit a metal stud or sheet?

I am trying to hang curtains in my apartment and have been using plastic anchors with around 1.25" long screws to secure the brackets. On one of the windows (which opens into the patio), I seem to have hit a metal stud or sheet about 5" away from and 5" above the window frame. I have ended up removing drywall material from a 3/8" circular hole upon multiple tries of securing an anchor and screw in that location.

The metal surface is around 3/4" to 7/8" deep into the wall. I have tried to use a drill bit directly on it using my 12V B&D cordless drill to no avail.

For now, I have given it a rest after filling the hole with spackle. Can anyone advise me on how to proceed next?

FYI: My apartment is on the 3rd floor. The hole location seems to be in the center of the stud or so my stud-finder suggests.

Answer:

All the answers/ suggestions have some validity, especially the Lintel and Steel girders possible in the "Commercial" construction, but I have to say I agree most with MOVE your points of attachment, widen or narrow the scope, up / down / sideways. The accommodation in doing that will probably be minimal and the success might actually resolve whatever the issue is you can't determine.

Since you state you are already patching, and I am not a fan of stud finders, I do find that a Simple/Cheap 8 D or 10 D finish nail works well leaving a minimal size hole to be filled. EZE anchors, after would also be my choice.
